The world’s governments are meeting this month in Glasgow, Scotland for the 26th world climate summit. It is time for the US to promote emergency global climate action and stop obstructing it, as it has in past Global Climate Summits.

We demand:
– Mandatory Emissions Cuts — The US must commit itself and push other industrial nations to binding emissions cuts sufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
– Climate Debt Reparations — The US must pledge at least $800 billion this decade to helping low-income nations mitigate damages from global warming and build their own clean energy economies.
– Climate Jobs — The US must create millions of good jobs building a 100% clean energy economy.
– Just Transition — The US climate program must provide good jobs to workers displaced by the transition and must ensure that disadvantaged communities get the good jobs and the improved housing, mass transit, and toxic waste clean-up they need.
New York needs a Just Transition. For example, the state’s $200 million investment in offshore wind tower manufacturing at the Port of Albany must ensure green economic development in the adjacent South End, including good jobs for residents and clean energy upgrades and other improvements to housing.

Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace is sponsoring a forum in support of Julian Assange, who will be in court on Oct. 26 in London where the US will try to have him extradited to face trial for telling the truth about US war crimes. He faces 175 years in prison. A film about the case and rally for Julian Assange will be shown and a speaker will update people on the case. The Biden administration has had months to reshape how the United States treats and welcomes people. Please call and e-mail the White House with the following message:

Mr. President, you promised a more compassionate and humane response to immigration and border issues.

I ask you now to conduct an investigation into the events in Del Rio against Haitian migrants, and hold Border Patrol and all involved parties accountable.

Additionally, Congress should enact legislation on Border Patrol accountability to stop abuses and protect the rights of all migrants, regardless of their race or country of origin.

PLEASE HALT THE DEPORTATION FLIGHTS TO HAITI IMMEDIATELY.

The effects and risks of climate change are compelling young people the world round to call for system change as the only solution to avoid a catastrophic collapse. This film looks at the role economic growth has had in bringing about this crisis, and explores the alternatives to it, offering a vision of hope for the future. Sanctions are a weapon of Economic War, resulting in chronic shortages of basic necessities, economic dislocation, chaotic hyperinflation, artificial famines, disease, and poverty. The poorest and the weakest – infants, children, the chronically ill and the elderly – suffer the worst impact of sanctions.  People are dying because of sanctions.  As many as 40,000 people may have died in Venezuela alone as a result of US sanctions that made it harder for ordinary citizens to access food, medicine and medical equipment. What remains, and what COVID-19 has exposed for us all to see, is a corrupt and rotten capitalist system built to serve the rich and powerful while leaving only crumbs for working people. Over the course of his long career, President Biden has been a dedicated servant of this exploitative system and the greedy and selfish interests in charge. We call on the working people of the Capital District to unite in forcefully and persistently asserting that a better world is possible and achievable!
Our demands:
Medicare For All:
no premiums, no co-pays, no deductibles, everyone and everything covered…
The Green New Deal:
an all-out national effort against the oncoming disaster of climate change
Fight COVID 19 and Inequality:
generous direct income support for all workers and small business, full federal mobilization of our health care resources to provide vaccination, quality treatment, testing and contact tracing for all.
Dismantle the War Economy: our greatest national security threats are here at home, and Marines, aircraft carriers, stealth bombers, overseas bases, sanctions, blockades and interventions are useless in fighting them. A more peaceful world starts with us!
End the Blockade on Cuba: full efforts into normalizing relations with Cuba, removing all Trump Administration sanctions and ending the economic blockade on Cuba.
Rebuild America: while we lit trillions on fire in Iraq and Afghanistan, our bridges, roads, schools, power grids and sewer and water systems were falling apart. More earthmovers and less tanks!
Peace in the Streets: Abolish ICE, demilitarize and downsize our bloated, corrupt and brutal police forces and end their war of mass incarceration and murder against black, brown and indigenous lives.
The people united will never be defeated!!

January 11th will mark the 18th anniversary of the first prisoners arriving at the US naval base at Guantanamo.  Forty men — five of whom were cleared for release during the Obama administration — remain imprisoned there.  BNP’s January 11th peace vigil will focus on Guantanamo and the men unjustly imprisoned there…to call for their release or trial in civilian courts.
